The traditional clothing for men is called the thobe, which is a long, loose-fitting garment that is worn over a shirt and trousers. The thobe is made of cotton or linen and is available in many colors and styles. Men also wear a headscarf known as a ghutra, which is held in place with a black cord known as an agal. There is an item that men often wear is the “Bisht”, which is a cloak-like garment that is worn over the thobe on special occasions. The Bisht is made of wool or silk and is decorated with gold embroidery.

For women, the Kuwait traditional dress is called the Abaya, which is a long, loose-fitting garment that covers the entire body. A hijab is also worn to conceal their hair. Some women will also cover their entire faces with a black niqab veil. More colorful Jalabiyas are preferred to use in some special events. For travelers, light chinos or cargo pants are an acceptable alternative; if you prefer shorts in the heat, make sure they are at least knee-length; three-quarter cargos can be a decent option in the heat. Men wearing sandals are fairly frequent, although flip-flops are also acceptable.

  • An ordinary T-shirt is acceptable as long as your clothes do not have a low neckline that reveals cleavage or exposes your belly.

  • Anything that is tight, clinging, or see-through should be avoided.

  • Take a scarf or pashmina with you; you may find it useful to pull over your shoulders or as a shield from the intense air conditioning.
